Detailed information about module 6

Module 6 - Bioinformatics and integrated Solanaceae research

Module leader: Heiko Schoof

Home_TomPotVertical

To efficiently exploit genomics data generated within EU-SOL this Module coordinates data management and integrates data and analysis tools in a distributed platform for Solanaceae genomics. This includes databases for archival and management of data, analysis tools and comprehensive analysis, connectivity technology for integrating distributed data and analysis resources and standards for data representation and processing. Publicly available data will be captured and integrated with the EU-SOL platform, and links established with international Solanaceae resources, e.g. the tomato genome bioinformatics groups or the Solanaceae Genomics Network SGN. The distributed bioinformatics platform aims at making state-of-the-art bioinformatics data and analyses available to all EU-SOL partners, which will be offered training in utilizing this resource for their research.

Research and development in methods for statistical and comparative analysis of functional genomics data will result in novel methodologies that will immediately be applied to EU-SOL data. Comprehensive bioinformatic analysis and annotation of the tomato genome and other relevant Solanaceae sequence collections will generate an essential data resource for functional genomics, required both for experiment design and evaluation of results. The tomato genome will serve as a backbone against which to organize and structure genomics data and as a basis for comparative bioinformatics with other Solanaceae and model plant species.

All data, tools and results will be made publicly available through a web portal. While individual databases and analysis resources remain distributed, the portal will serve as access point. Here, also information on how to access and utilize the distributed data and analysis resources through the connectivity layer will be presented, along with toolkits and instructions for connecting applications.
