Module 7 - Coordination and Integration of EU-SOL and Provision of Training, Education and Outreach within the research programme

Module 7 will provide management and coodination of EU-SOL and facilitate interactions and enhance efficiency of the project. This module will also facilitate interactions with other ongoing Solanaceae projects and other related projects at the European and global level.Training within the porojects and the wider research community will be provided and the exchange of scientists between laboratories within and outside the project wil be facilitated.
                                                                                                                                                

Public engagement with European agriculture is critical for public support of both agriculture and agricultural research. Linking the results of this project with the history of human development of solanaceous crops will bring together the skills of the Natural History Museum in public engagement with the primary food-quality research of the consortium.

Module7WP 7.2 of this Module will integrate information about the history of agricultural
development of the tomato and potato and set this in the context of the wider
biodiversity of the family Solanaceae by including the aubergine and pepper and other minor food crops. This web-based information resource will be and aimed at the adult educated public, including those young adults in formal education; this audience focus will allow the consortium to bring more sophisticated and complex issues to the public in a step-wise fashion. The resource will be aimed at life-long learners from diverse backgrounds; we will explore where our foods come from and how we have changed them through breeding from the wild to highly domesticated state.
Multiple entry points will enable users to see the agricultural development of these crops
across their entire history, rather than just in the modern context, so often frightening and technologically opaque.

In addition to the web-based information resource, we will, in conjunction with the participants of Module 8, develop the public interaction forum for dissemination and discussion of both the progress of the research and its results and potential societal context.

The particulate nature of genes (Mendelism) provides a basic common rule for inheritance in all living organisms. These genetic principles are the foundation of modern plant breeding and the understanding of these is central to public engagement with agricultural research. Segregating populations of dwarf tomatoes suitable for restricted growing spaces will be constructed using early seedling traits as well as fruit colour mutations that improve health benefits. During the second phase of EU-SOL we will develop an educational package for secondary schools to introduce the principles of Mendelian genetics to secondary schools through hands-on practical experience using these populations. Through the EU-SOL bioinformatics platform, a dedicated website will be created where schools will be able to upload their data such that it will be possible to analyse the combined datasets, thus giving students practical experience with collaborative research.
