About Us

Nunhems, Bayer CropScience’s vegetable seed business, is a global specialist in vegetable seeds and sharing products, concepts and expertise with the professional horticultural production industry and supply chain. Our portfolio includes leading varieties and brands in crops such as leek, onion, carrot, melon, cucumber, tomato, watermelon, lettuce, pepper and chicory witloof. Nunhems is among the world’s leading vegetable seed companies with an extensive range of 28 species and some 2,500 varieties.

We develop innovative vegetable seeds based on the expertise and dedication of our people. By combining competencies from different disciplines in an integrated breeding approach we optimize crops and speed up the development of new vegetable varieties with added value for growers, processors, retailers and consumers.

Nunhems Netherlands BV and Eu-Sol

The definition of fruit quality is largely dependent on the preferences of the consumers. Their expectations, however, can differ per country and culture. Therefore evaluation of fruit quality by people in test panels from different countries is necessary to identify favourable traits. The gained knowledge can then be used as guidance for breeding better cultivars. Nunhems will grow a number of tomato cultivars under optimal greenhouse conditions and provide the fruits for sensory evaluation to partners from the Netherlands, France and Italy (Work Package 1.1).

Crosses of crops with their wild relatives can lead to offspring with better characteristics. Identification of the genes underlying quality traits can accelerate breeding for better performing crops. Nunhems Netherlands BV is analysing growth and fruit quality of 81 inbred lines from such a cross between tomato and a wild relative. This work is performed in cooperation with other groups. More details in Work package 4.3.
