About Us
Maritsa Vegetable Crops Research Institute, founded in 1930, has developed over the years as a leading centre for vegetable research in Bulgaria. It is a legal entity, under the Agrarian Academy. The research program is devoted to improvement of vegetable quality by creation of valuable gene sources with high biological value, resistant to biotic and abiotic stress factors; improvement of integrating systems for pest control and utilization of bio-products to improve nutrient regime. The institute is a reliable partner in international programs and coordinator of successful projects in FP6 and FP7.
MVCRI and Eu-Sol
MVCRI is involved in WP 4.3 of the project with the task to phenotype Solanum chessmanii (Galapagos island tomato) collection, to analyze basic chemical components in the fruits and to screen it for resistance towards common tomato viruses. We are responsible also for seed multiplication and distribution of plant and seed material to EU-SOL partners.
