About Us
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem was established in 1925 and today it has 1200 academic faculty, 12,000 undergraduates, 7600 master's degree students, 2,600 doctoral candidates. The Faculty of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Quality Sciences is the only institute of higher education in Israel offering university degrees in agriculture and is also home to the only Schools of Nutritional Sciences and of Veterinary Medicine. Established in 1942 as the Institute for Agricultural Sciences with 21 masters students, the Faculty today has a student body of 2,300 students.
The Hebrew University and Eu-Sol
The role of the Hebrew University in Eu-Sol is to develop tomato genetic resources that include crosses with wild tomato species as well as old (heritage) tomato varieties. This germplasm (genetic material) is distributed to the Eu-Sol laboratories and to companies involved in tomato breeding so they can then use it to search for genes that affect traits that Eu-Sol is interested in, such as flavour. The field trials of Eu-Sol are conducted in Akko in the northern part of Israel. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is a key player in Module four.
