About Us
The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is the largest university in Greece. It comprises 9 Faculties organized into 39 Schools, as well as 3 independent Schools (a total of 42 Schools). The School of Pharmacy consists of the following departments:
- Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry
- Department of Pharmaceutical Technology
- Department of Pharmacognosy - Pharmacology
The Group of Biotechnology of Pharmaceutical Plants belongs to the Department of Pharmacognosy – Pharmacology and the main research interests cover the following:
- Ascorbate biosynthesis, oxidation and their genetic modification in plants
- Biotechnology of pharmaceutical plants with emphasis on the biosynthesis and its manipulation of the pharmacological active diterpenes in Cistus creticus and Salvia fruticosa
- Deciphering the biochemical and molecular mechanisms by which low oxygen suppresses fruit ripening

Within the EU-SOL project the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is involved in the identification and characterisation of genes involved in vitamin C biosynthesis and genetic engineering of the pathway
