About Us

Research at the Biochemistry Chair focuses around basic aspects of molecular plant biochemistry, physiology and plant biotechnology. With these studies we aim at contributing to the improvement of biotechnological strategies to produce valuable compounds in plant systems (Molecular Engineering, Molecular Farming) and to optimize the agronomic performance of crop plants. In addition, analytic tools for monitoring subtle changes in transcript, metabolite and protein abundance are developed and provided for modern plant breeding (Metabolic Profiling). Beside plants, fungi are included in our investigations as models for plant-microbial interactions. We also study gene expression in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisae particularly its roles in regulation of cell size and cell division.

Friedrich Alexander University and Eu-Sol

FAU is coordinator of WP 3.5. Its specific role is to analyse regulation of tuber sprouting and to improve postharvest characteristics of potato tubers. Metabolic and molecular changes occurring during tuber development and the breakage of dormancy are studied since several years and significant contributions have been made concerning the role of sucrose. Moreover, a vast number of transgenic plants modified in plant metabolism have been generated and characterized with special emphasize on carbohydrate metabolism, partitioning and sink- source regulation. Recently, we also started to investigate the regulation of developmental processes by phytohormones (GA). Apart from the well established potato transformation a number of molecular tools have been developed which can be applied within the project, e.g. normalized cDNA libraries from dormant and sprouting tuber buds, cDNA arrays, imaging technologies, targeted metabolic profiling.
