About Us
A description of the primary aims and strengths of your organisation: BIOPLANT, Biotechnologisches Forschungslabor GmbH, which was founded in 1985, is a subsidiary of the Böhm-Nordkartoffel-group, the leading german potato breeding enterprise. The group performs breeding for all market segments (starch, consumption, processing). Besides tetraploid breeding a diploid breeding programm is performed.
The work of BIOPLANT employs tissue culture and molecular biology techniques in the following areas:
- More than 100 commercial potato varieties and promising breeding clones are kept in tissue culture. Starting from this 'living collection' about 500.000 plantlets are produced for the production of healthy planting material each year.
- Successful clones of a diploid breeding programme are combined by protoplast fusion and plant regeneration.
- In collaboration with universities and research institutes molecular markers are developed for different quality and resistance traits.
BIOPLANT and Eu-Sol
In EU-SOL BIOPLANT is involved in assessing leads for the application by potato breeding companies.
