About Us

The Genetics Department is focussed on:

  1. Teaching Genetics for students of the careers of Agricultural Engineering, Biological Sciences and Natural Resources Engineering
  2. Research on tomato genetics and breeding. The two main research objectives are the genetic resistance to insects and the inheritance of agronomic traits related to fruit quality, in crosses between the cultivated tomato and a wild species related to it. Recently, a new molecular marker laboratory has been established at the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales and the group is currently focussed on the mapping of genes involved in those characters
  3. Developing of teaching aids. We have developed a Mendelian Genetics Practical, using tomato mutants, for students at different levels. We offer a kit composed by a manual and tomato seeds (in Spanish)
The National University of Salta and Eu-Sol

In EU-SOL we are trying to unravel the genetic basis of “fruit shelf life” in tomato lines derived from an interspecific cross. The idea is also to map the genes involved in this and other fruit quality traits (WP 1.4, partner #41).
