About Us
Wageningen University is the leading European university in the Life Sciences. Researchers and students focus on the fields of nutrition, health, nature and the living environment. For the third year in a row, Wageningen University has topped the list of 14 Dutch universities in the Guide to Choosing Higher Education.
Wageningen University and Eu-Sol
Wageningen University is involved in many different aspects of the EU-Sol project.
First of all, Wageningen University is the coordinator of the project and managing EU-SOL is primary the responsibility of Prof. Willem Stiekema and Dr. René Klein Lankhorst.
Several staff is involved in the tomato research program of EU-SOL. In this program, different tomato collections and populations are studied for a wide variety of different traits and large databases containing all information are constructed (Dr. Richard Finkers). Special attention is given to traits involved in aspects like taste, smell and ripening of tomatoes and the volatile compounds involved in this are studied in detail (Dr. Sjaak van Heusden). In a second line of research, the occurrence of health promoting substances and compounds in tomato is studied (Prof. Harro Bouwmeester). The group of Prof. Fred van Eeuwijk is responsible for the statistical analyses of all gathered information.
Wageningen University is also involved in the world wide project which aims at sequencing the tomato genome and within EU-SOL, Dr. René Klein Lankhorst is responsible for coordinating and supporting the tomato sequencing programs of 5 participating European countries.
Dr. Christian Bachem is responsible for the EU-SOL potato research at Wageningen University. This work mainly focuses on the development of potato tubers, and on the analyses of traits involved in the quality of potato tubers. Also, an important aspect of this program is assessing novel leads that can be used by the potato breeding companies.
Furthermore, Wageningen university is involved in studying the societal aspects of the implementation of biotechnology and genomics in modern plant breeding. This part of the EU-SOL program is lead by Prof. Bart Gremmen.
