Biodiversity

An introduction to biodiversity.

A simple explanation of what biodiversity is, how we make sense of it and its importance to us. Plus an introduction to the biodiversity of potatoes and tomatoes.

Tomato biodiversity

Here you can explore variety of tomato plants. Just select a tomato species or cultivar, to look at, from the menus on the left.

A tiny slice of tomato biodiversity.

The variety of tomato plants is enormous and every plant different, you can learn about the species whose fruit tastes soapy, the cultivar whose great flavour makes it a gardener's favourite and the wild tomato which produces purple striped, hairy fruit. (What are cultivars/species?)

Many of the wild species of tomato have been used in breeding cultivars in the past and others will be used in the future; the variety of wild species available to plant breeders is of great importance in allowing them to produce better cultivars to face the challenges of growing sufficient crops in an ever changing world.
