The variety of potato plants is enormous, in fact there are more wild species of potato than any other cultivated plant.
Many of the wild species of potato have been used in breeding cultivars in the past and others will be used in the future; the variety of wild species available to plant breeders is of great importance in allowing them to produce better cultivars to face the challenges of growing sufficient crops in an ever changing world.
